Many people choose to have their teeth whitened after their orthodontic treatment is complete. Here, our Surrey orthodontists explain why.
Many of our patients find that, after having braces for months or years, the spots on their teeth where their brackets were adhered are lighter in colour than the rest of their teeth.
This is because over time food and drink can cause teeth to discolour.
While you had braces, the small area of the tooth that was covered by the brackets had been protected and sealed off from exposure to all the food and drink that you’ve consumed, whereas the other parts of your teeth have not.
Because of this, many patients find that their teeth look splotchy and uneven after their orthodontic treatment is complete. This doesn't mean that the exposed areas have become unusually yellow, but rather, that they appear to be so in contrast with the areas that have been protected by the brackets.
This uneven appearance will diminish over time but some patients prefer not to wait, and choose to undergo professional teeth whitening treatment.
Having teeth whitening treatment done helps to remove stains from the surface of the teeth, and lightens the actual colour of the teeth as well, resulting in a more even and brighter smile.
