Today our Surrey orthodontist shares ‘Smile’ a graphic novel by Raina Telgemeier for kids aged 8-12 years. This delightful book depicts the emotional ups and downs of dealing with braces, friends, school and more.
‘Smile’ by Raina Telgemeier (author of the Baby-Sitters Club) is about Raina, who wants nothing more than to be a normal 6th grader.
One night, however, Raina has a fall and severely damages her two front teeth. This fateful event results in a long and frustrating ordeal involving orthodontic surgery, braces or in-ovation braces, cringe-worthy headgear… and even a retainer with false teeth attached.
If that isn't enough, Raina still has to has to deal with all the normal day-to-day confusion about boys and the social issues that come with being a tween.
Coping with braces and orthodontic treatment can be difficult, especially for kids and teens, when all they really want is to fit in with their friends.
This delightful graphic novel not only deals with orthodontic issues, young Raina also finds herself coping with a major earthquake, boy confusion, and friends who turn out to be not so friendly.
