Most people know that rubber bands play a role in the treatment process when getting braces, but why are they needed? Here, our Surrey orthodontists discuss the purpose of rubber bands for braces and why they are so important in helping to straighten your smile.
Braces & Rubber Bands
Often referred to as elastics, rubber bands attach to your braces' brackets and can be configured in various ways to achieve a specific outcome. They are fastened using small metal hooks.
There are many cases where rubber bands can be used with braces. They are often used to help correct different types of misalignment issues, including:
- Overbites
- Underbites
- Open bites
- Crossbites
There are two types of rubber bands used during orthodontic treatment. The first type is called ligatures, which wrap around each bracket. The second type is referred to as interarch bands (also called intermaxillary elastics).
These rubber bands are typically inserted and changed regularly by the one undergoing treatment. An orthodontist will advise on when to place and remove them according to the treatment plan.
How Rubber Bands Help With Braces
Rubber bands are used with braces to apply additional pressure on specific areas in the mouth. Their main role is to help reposition the jaw for those facing alignment issues. Occasionally, these elastic bands are also employed to guide a tooth into its proper place. However, the primary responsibility for overall dental alignment remains with the braces.
They can differ in size, force types, and materials tailored to the patient's needs. Moreover, they can be configured in multiple ways to target specific patient concerns, as detailed in the treatment plan provided by the orthodontist.
Not all patients require rubber bands or elastics with their braces. However, if rubber bands are needed, it is essential to follow the orthodontist’s guidance. This is important for ensuring that the treatment goes according to plan.
How long do orthodontic rubber bands stay on your braces?
As time goes by, rubber bands gradually lose their elasticity. This means that the force they exert on your teeth and jaw will diminish. Consequently, rubber bands need to be replaced. Your orthodontist will let you know when and how often to replace your rubber bands.
The total time for using rubber bands with your braces varies based on your treatment plan. Some people may need rubber bands for just a few weeks, while others might have to wear them for several months.
Can you eat with rubber bands on your braces?
Patients frequently wonder about their dietary options while wearing braces, especially if rubber bands are involved. The good news is that there are no additional changes needed to your diet with the addition of elastics. You can enjoy the same foods with braces, regardless of whether elastics are present or not.
While patients can keep their elastics in while eating, if the elastics become bothersome, they can easily be removed and reattached afterwards.
What happens if you don't wear your rubber bands?
Not using the rubber bands on braces when you are supposed to can cause future issues. These rubber bands are essential for the treatment process, and not wearing them can impact the effectiveness of the braces, preventing them from helping to achieve the goal of orthodontic treatment. It may even extend the duration of the treatment beyond what was initially anticipated.
If you forget to wear your elastics for a few hours or even a full day, then the impact on treatment should be minimal. However, if you visit your orthodontist and say, 'I forgot to wear my rubber bands for a month (or longer)', there's a good chance that your treatment plan will be extended.
